Blog #10 Sex and Gender-Based Systems

The video, "Woke Read Alouds: They, She, He Easy as ABC" aims to educate kindergarteners about different pronouns through an alphabet-based book. The video shows Ki, the teacher, reading a book that introduces children to various pronouns such as "he," "she," "they," "ze," and even "tree." While the intention behind this video is to promote inclusivity and understanding I think it is still a hard topic for young children to grasp at such a young age. The thing that jumped out to me the most was the pronouns, "ze" and "tree" which I've never heard of before being used as a pronoun. In my opinion, using the word "tree" as a pronoun is kind of confusing, especially using it in a sentence acting as a pronoun. Just think of the sentence, "Tree is sitting under the tree." It is a little weird to know exactly what I am talking about and I think this would be confusing for young children. I think people should use whatever pronouns they wish, however, I think there should be some "guidance" to this, or else it would get confusing when speaking and writing sentences. Also, the implementation of inclusive education policies in RI can some present some challenges. While these policies aim to create a supportive environment for all students, there are concerns about the potential for controversy and the need for careful consideration of parental rights and community values. Finding a balance between promoting inclusivity and respecting diverse perspectives is crucial to ensuring that all students feel supported and valued in the educational system.

  1. Hi Emma, creating an open minded and inclusive environment is really important for students to feel comfortable and understood in the classroom. Students should be able to express themselves in the classroom setting once the teacher and students have created a bond.

  2. Hi Emma, I agree with everything you said as I myself did not understand the new pronouns that the teacher introduced in the video. I also liked how you mentioned both the positive and negative approaches the public might take. Very nice job

Hi Emma I 100% agree with your entire blog. Referring to each student with their preferred pronouns is super important, but giving them guidance when they’re learning more about their identity is also super important. The new pronouns are confusing to me as well, but you did a wonderful job with being respectful to your future students, nice job!
